After getting reports back from my Mom in DC, I’m truly enjoying these 75 degree days with wind. I actually keep getting burnt because I don’t realize how sunny it is outside because the winds are so enjoyable. I’m currently peeling on both shoulders and my chest. Whoops! Time for more sunscreen.
I finally feel like I can sit down and write now that things have settled down a bit. I’ve been in Chicago for over a month now! It’s crazy. We took the time to explore around our city since we’ve been up in Wisconsin almost every other weekend between Andy’s parents’ farm or Lake Geneva.
On Friday, after I spent a good 45 minutes walking Starla around playing Pokemon Go, we decided to find some more local restaurants in Evanston. We figured out that a local brewery, Smylie Brothers Brewing Co., is only a ten minute walk from us. So harnessed up Starla and walked over to spend some time on the patio. I really enjoyed it, I’ll write more about it later. The only downfall was the untrained host staff that took more than 30 minutes to seat us and we were only seated once we pointed out to the host that a table outside had been vacant for more than 10 minutes and no one had been sat there.
On Saturday, we decided to be true Chicagoans and go to a street festival. Taste of Chicago was happening so we ventured down to Grant Park and tasted some awesome food. Here’s some of the highlights. The whole thing was on my snapchat at: alannaandco.
There was a huge Black Lives Matter protest that came to Taste of Chicago and apparently they were shutting down streets in the Magnificent Mile. It’s sad that I get worried and want to avoid these types of protests after the Dallas shooting last weekend. Afterwards we went to a rooftop bar for some super strong Margaritas and then I took my first Uber pool out of the city. It took a damn hour since we had to wait for a girl to join in the Uber pool, who never ended up showing up. But I did save $10, so that’s good.
Sunday, we went for a 6 mile bike ride and then wanted to get Starla out for some socialization. We’ve been hearing all about the great dog beaches so that’s where we were headed. Evanston has a dog beach but you need to buy a yearly dog permit that I haven’t gotten around to. Montrose is the huge dog beach that everyone has been talking about, but we drove around for 10 minutes trying to find parking and were unsuccessful. About 5 minutes south is Belmont Harbor Dog beach which is pretty tiny but worked just fine for us. Starla had a great time until all the sand kept getting in her eyes.
Belmont is right by Lakeview/Boystown. I’m still trying to get a handle on all of the Chicago neighborhoods. We stopped for a patio lunch at Rocks and had some great people and dog watching. It’s so dog friendly everywhere. They had an insane beer list including a whole ton of Boilermakers that I would save for a day that we weren’t driving.
We finished off the weekend with dinner in and watching Hail, Ceasar from the Coen Brothers. Has anyone else seen that movie? I usually like the Coen Brothers movies but that one was a bit weird/pointless. Channing Tatum was great to look at, as always.
How was your weekend?
