I was talking to a friend the other day about the audiobooks that I get for free using Overdrive at my library. She was shocked that I still use a library and don’t just pay for audiobooks or eBooks online. It’s crazy how simple and easy it is to get books now and the fact that so many people forget how awesome libraries are. Even I don’t go to visit my local branch as much as I should (as soon as I get my IL license and proof of residency…)
No matter what type of book you like, hardcopy, ebook, or audiobook, here are some reasons why you should be visiting your library more this summer.
Reasons to Visit your Local Library
Books are free: Obviously, the most compelling reason to go to the library are the free books! As much as I love owning books, they are pricey! Many times I’ll buy a book and then never read it again. So if you want to go easy on your wallet, pick up the books at your library and return them after your done. Usually they will lend you a book for two weeks but you can usually extend your hold if you take longer to read a book.
You can borrow other stuff besides books: You can also borrow DVDs, Blu-rays, audiobooks, eBooks, magazines, and more. Sure, you can always go to Redbox and get a movie for a couple bucks but free is always better, right?
There’s no quieter place to work: Working at Starbucks or local cafés can be great, but if you want some peace and quiet, the library is the best place to be. It has a good atmosphere for work and research with a ton of information at your fingertips.
Free Wi-Fi: Almost all libraries now have free wi-fi. No 30 minute time limits or requiring you to purchase a latte before you can access the wi-fi. It’s truly free!

Browsing the stacks is relaxing: I don’t know about you but I love spending time perusing the stacks of books and trying out new things. Is it bad that I judge some books by their covers?
Book sales: Libraries often sell used books for a steal. If you’re wanting a particular book, get it at a library sale for cheap to add to your permanent home collection.
Pick a librarian’s brain: Librarians can be great resources for either helping with your research or recommending books that you might be interested in. Not only do they have great knowledge about the books, but they also usually have information about the local city that they’re located in and are pros at researching information fast. They can help you find anything you need. My boyfriend’s mom actually calls her library whenever she needs a piece of information rather than googling everything.
