Being a dog owner is one of the most rewarding journeys I’ve embarked on in my twenties so far. Dogs are curious, needy, loving, and so much more. I adopted Starla when I was in my last relationship. Being single and dating, and now being in a new relationship is so much different now that I’m a dog owner. Here’s how:
After-work happy hours are a thing of the past
Isn’t that nice to just stay a bit late after work and hang out with co-workers? Nope. You’ll have to run home to take your pup out. And after saying hi and taking them out, who wants to leave that sad face to go drink with people you just spent eight hours with?
Bodily Functions aren’t off-limits
Usually there’s some unspoken rule about never talking about any sort of bodily functions before the six month mark (or later for some!) But as a dog-owner farts, drool, vomit and poop is an every day occurrence. So talking about it it is obviously going to happen. The first time my boyfriend watched Starla, I was checking up to make sure that she pooped during every walk.
There’s no such thing as adorable cuddling
Well, I guess there is. Just not with your significant other! The picture says it all.
You have a new title…Mom
You are now a dog Mom or Dad. Even if you don’t want to, you’ll be referred to as “Starla’s Mom” and that will be your only name to some. My boyfriend definitely refers to me in the third person as “Starla’s Mom”. For example, when he comes over and she’s ignoring me but super excited to see him, he starts talking to her like, “Has Mom been ignoring you?” You’ll also learn that your significant other has a pretty darn cute baby/dog voice.
Acts of service will start being the most important way that you appreciate love
Waking up at 6 a.m. to walk the dog with you, Picking up your dog from your apartment when you have to stay late at work, volunteering to take your dog along on a hike, and even just being the doggy bag handler for the day will mean the world to you. Much more important than any bouquet of flowers.
How has your relationship changed as a result of being a dog owner?
