My husband and I have been married over 8.5 years now, so we definitely have our dating schedule down. We are huge outdoors people and love being outside as much as possible, but during the winter months, that gets put on hold.
One of my fondest Valentine’s Day dates we had was in 2008. This was a few months before he started getting very sick, and was one of the last times we celebrated anything while he was healthy. You can read a little bit about our long journey here.
My husband was stationed in California at the time, so we lived a few minutes from the beach. It was our first Valentine’s as a married couple, so I thought it would be fun to go all out, get dressed up, and do the traditional celebration. Thanks to the marine corps, those plans were cancelled, so we just decided to take some supper to the beach and take a walk.
It ended up being the best February date ever! It was so sweet and simple, but we will remember it forever. I took this picture that evening, and it sparks so many memories each time I see it 🙂
We live back in Texas and winter can be just about anything weather wise. Warm, cold, wet, ice, snow and even tornadoes can be a part of our wintry weather. To keep our moral up during the cold months, we have a list of our favorite date ideas that we really love and enjoy. In fact, I have started enjoying parts of winter just because these dates are always so much fun.
Bonus, these are all simple, laid back, and affordable so anyone can enjoy them!
One. Diner Date
We are total diner lovers. Denny’s is my all time favorite since I can get healthy swaps for breakfast too. We love going for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!
Two. Reading Date By The Fire
Since he is going through some really intense training for his law enforcement job, he spends the weekend training and studying. It has been fairly cold the last few weeks, so we have been keeping a fire going. To make sure we have a special time, we will agree to take a break from our work and meet in the living room, by the fire. Cuddle up with some blankets, and read.
This is more fun than watching TV sometimes, plus the fire is romantic! If you follow me on instagram (@alexis.roch) or snapchat :: alexisroch, you’ve probably seen a bunch of cozy fireplace pictures the past month 🙂
Three. Grocery Shopping Date
I go to the store every Friday and honestly, it gets kinda rough on my joints to carry all the bags, so I love it when he is off on Fridays. We have made it a little date now during winter. They have a little coffee shop inside our store, so we will go there and have some coffee or tea, chat for awhile. Then, tackle our list. Our grocery store is really big, so it is fun tracing through the aisles and getting everything we need.
Four. Road Trip to The Country
Road trips are another favorite date for us! Although this is a big summer activity for us, we love to take a road trip to my parents house for a little getaway. We load up Ruger and head south. It isn’t a far drive, but we always take the long route through the country roads, pick up some coffee, and enjoy the scenery. My parents live in a small town and they have land, so it is always like a vacation to hang out there.
Five. Downtown Date
Our town as a really cute downtown area with historical buildings, antique shopping, and eating places. In the winter, we love to head down there for lunch, then shop around the boutiques or antique stores. I always walk away with fresh foods, flowers, jams, and candles. It is fun to make an entire afternoon out of it!
Six. Movie Marathon Weekend
We are huge movie fans and it is definitely a favorite pastime of ours. When the weather is nice, we usually just watch a movie at night. In the winter, it gives us an excuse to stay in our pajamas all day and watch movies. I usually make a bunch of healthy snacks, drinks, and popcorn. We always pick a theme too like 80s movies, westerns, disaster, horror, sports movies, etc.
Seven. Cooking Date
The last favorite date we have in the winter is cooking a special meal together. Winter is the perfect time to spend hours in the kitchen without it getting to hot. In the summer, it is always over 100 degrees, so I stay out of there as much as possible.
Last weekend we decided to make one of our favorite chili recipe with some from scratch corn bread and these healthy chocolate cakes for dessert! It is fun to cook together since I am usually the one that does all the meal preparing. Ruger the bulldog got to help too so he loves cooking dates as well! (although he prefers baking days 😉 )
I love having dates that are special for each season!
